Salma Hayek


Biography

Salma Hayek is your Mexican Hollywood actress who has been in the news often for the kind of projects she chooses and performances delivered. Recently she has also taken upon the added task of director and television and film producer. The dusky beauty has also contributed generously in the Mexican and Spanish cinema, besides her work in U.S.

Salma Hayek Jimenez was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz to Diana Jimenez, an opera singer and talent scout, and Sami Hayek, an oil company executive. Hayek's father is of Lebanese descent while her mother is of Spanish descent.

When she was 12, she was enrolled into the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, Louisiana. But citing her pranks and notorious behavior she was expelled from the school and sent to stay with her aunt in Houston, Texas till she was 17. Hayek later joined a college in Mexico City, where she studied International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana. An accomplished gymnast in childhood, Salma surprised everyone one day when she announced her dropping out from college in order to pursue a career in acting.

Career in Movies

With her determination towards achieving her goal, she soon got a lead role in Mexican tele series Teresa (1989), which made her a star in Mexico. In 1994, Hayek starred in the award winning film El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley) and also got nominated for an Ariel Award.

But her Hollywood dreams soon compelled her to quit the show in 1991 and flew to Los Angles, California where she prepared herself by studying acting under Stella Adler. By late 1992, she was relegated to only bit parts on shows and movies like "Street Justice" (1991), "The Sinbad Show" (1993), "Nurses" (1991) top name a few.

It was Robert Rodriguez and his producer wife Elizabeth Avellan that provided Salma with as deserving break in Desperado (1995) opposite Antonio Banderas after citing her in Paul Rodriguez's late-night Spanish-language talk show in 1992. The movie went on to garner a cult status and Salma Hayek announced her arrival with fireworks.

In 1996, she again got cast by Rodriguez in From Dusk Till Dawn where she shared the screen space with the likes of George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino. She followed this successful streak with Fools Rush In (1997) opposite "Friends” actor Matthew Perry.

The coming years saw her working in some of the most credible performances on her account. Breaking Up (1997), In the Time of the Butterflies (2001) (TV),which even won Hayek an ALMA award as best actress; and the 1999 summer blockbuster Wild Wild West (1999).

It was during this time, that the actress decided to bring on screen her childhood dream of playing Frida Kahlo, the legendary Mexican painter. She co produced the movie in 2002. The movie was much appreciated with terrific performances from Salma and Alfred Molina as Kahlo's cheating husband "Diego Rivera". On the side was an entourage of stars including Antonio Banderas, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Edward Norton and Valeria Golino. It also brought her six nominations including the best actress and won two academy awards in best makeup and best original score.

When Hayek was upon asked to direct a movie wielded the microphone for Showtime called 'The Maldonado Miracle’ (2003), which was showcased at the Sundance Film festival, the world rose to the seriousness of her craft with which she performs.

A lieu of films followed after that including the Desperado trilogy final part, Once Upon A Time In Mexico (2003), After the Sunset (2004), Ask the Dust (2006) and Bandidas (2006).

She is currently engaged to Engaged to businessman Francois-Henri Pinualt. Pinault owns PPR, the luxury goods firm that owns iconic fashion houses Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent [March 9, 2007] and has a daughter with him named Valentina Paloma Pinault, she also has another daughter Mathide from her earlier marriage to Edward Norton.

Hayek holds the record of being the first Latin actress to be nominated for best actress in Oscars and in 2004 was declared one of the highest paid Latina actresses.

Biography

Madonna of Madrid or Spanish enchantress, some of the few entitles credited to the Hollywood actress, Penelope Cruz., although the name Tom Cruise was the thing that brought her into the lime light. Still there is more to Penelope than just her role of the other woman in the cruise’s broken marriage with Nicole Kidman.

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born on 28 April 1974, in Madrid to Eduardo (a retailer) and Encarna (a hairdresser). She has one younger sister, Monica, a professional flamenco dancer and TV star and one brother, also younger, named after his father. Penelope showed her inclination towards performing arts when she was a toddler only with her

Mimickery of TV ads. But as soon as she found her feet on ground, she‘s been skipping along wit dance beats.

She spent 9 years studying classical dance at Spain's National Conservatory, including three years of ballet with Angela Garrido, followed by jazz dance with Raul Caballero plus four years of courses with Cristina Rota in New York City.

Becoming a part time fashion model after beating 300 girls at an agency audition, she packed away her high school books and started pursuing drama studies at Madrid at the age of 15. A quick trail of music videos including one for popular band Menaco, Penelope found herself standing before the Hollywood’s doors.

Career in Movies

Penelope‘s career in Spanish movies kick started with her bagging a role in Laberinto griego, El (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth), a brief appearance in the Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992) (TV). Then came the Oscar-winning Belle epoque (1992), in which she played one of four sisters vying for the love of a handsome army deserter.

She ended up getting Goya for the movie which is just as big as academy awards in Spain.

With her outing into the international cinema [Almodóvar's Todo sobre mi madre (1999)

that changed her luck, and her earlier works with Carne trémula (1997) and best actress award winning movie-industry comedy Niña de tus ojos, La (1998) . She was ready to enter the Hollywood scene. This year was seen as marked one in her career with more credit acclaimed movies in her name and her first Hollywood venture The Hi-Lo Country (1998) directed by Stephen Frears.

The year 2000 brought her first starring role in the form of Women On Top, where she convincingly played a Brazilian chef with witching culinary skills. She also signed up Blow (2001) opposite Johnny Depp a Drug-trafficking drama and opposite Matt Damon in Billy Bob Thornton's All the Pretty Horses (2000).

The crowning glory however was her bagging a role opposite Tom Cruise in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky (2001). The then recently divorced Cruise found solace in the arms of Penelope which brought the lady under the notice of the media eye.

A variety of movies later namely Head in the Clouds (2004) and Gothika (2003)

in the following years that cemented her stay in Hollywood . with her getting split with Tom Cruise turned out to be in favor of her as now the world rose to notice Penelope’s acting prowess in stead of witnessing her love life splashed over every magazine.

Biography

While watching the famous interrogation scene from Basic Instinct, you can’t help yourself from noticing the aura and screen presence of Sharon Stone that she commands over you. The dishy actress, who was ruling the charts during the whole of 90s, has always displayed her intelligence and knack of going the other way from the crowd. And this can be cited as the reason for her tremendous success and popularity among the movie goers.

Sharon Vonne Stone, born March 10, 1958 in Meadville, Pennsylvania was the second of four children; of Dorothy an accountant and homemaker, and Joseph Stone, a tool and die manufacturer. When she was only 15 and studying in Saegertown High School, Pennsylvania and, she entered Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania, and graduated with a degree in creative writing and fine arts.

She was considered rather a smart kid, given her high IQ level and often asked to pursue a career in law. But the lure of movies got the better of her and she decided to walk on the uneven but yet interesting trail of movie Dom.

Career in Movies

In 1975, Stone entered and won the title of Miss Crawford County in Meadville. Later she shifted base to New Jersey in 1977 to live with an aunt, upon listening to the suggestion of one of the pageant judges that she should join modeling. She was soon signed by Ford Modeling Agency and appeared in TV commercials for Burger King, Clairol and Maybelline.

But it was while seeking more creative satisfaction that she landed up with her first movie appearance in 1980, in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories (1980). Later followed more tits and bits parts in movies like Wes Craven's horror movie, Deadly Blessing (1981), Action Jackson (1988), King Solomon's Mines (1985) etc. her moment of glory came when starred opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall (1990). This was also the time when she posed nude for the Playboy magazine.

But the major breakthrough that oscillated her to the topmost heights of Hollywood came when she signed up for bisexual serial killer in Basic Instinct (1992) opposite Michael Douglas. The movie made her a femme fatale among the masses and she automatically joined the creamy layer of movie industry. The controversial scene in the movie that became unwanted case of nudity on Sharon’s part alas! became a part of history. The fiery actress till date claims ignorance about the deal.

A series of movies followed where time and again she proved her mettle in roles essayed by her. In fact, she even won a Golden Globe Award in 1996 for Best Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture for her role as "Ginger" in Martin Scorsese's Casino opposite Robert DeNiro. The actress also earned herself a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1995.

She also did a guest appearance in the popular law series The Practice and even won an Emmy award in 2003 for it.

Her second innings at box office didn’t set the cash registers jingling exactly. Her two major movies Catwoman (2004) and Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction 2006 bombed at the box office.

The actress is a firm believer n Buddhism which she recently started practicing after a brief link with scientology. She was earlier married to Michael Greenburg in 1984, but got divorced after just two years. She again married in February 14, 1998, Phil Bronstein and again got a divorce. She has adopted three kids so far, being Roan Joseph Bronstein Laird Vonne Ston and, Quinn Kelly.

Since then Sharon has been rumored to have bisexual inclinations. The actress, with the way things are going will surely deliver one more performance to top her already filled up good acting books.
