Television stars striking it big in Hollywood stories have now found another name to add to their list with the strong willed yet demure looking Katie Holmes. Following a rather silent yet strategically stronger route to moviedom success, Katie Holmes rose to fame though her sheer talent attitude and knack for hard work.
Born on December 18, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio as the youngest child of Martin Holmes, lawyer by profession and Homemaker mother Kathleen, she was named Kate Noelle Holmes. Inheriting her mother’s good looks and tall height, she was still more of a tomboy than a graceful child, a matter which later became a cause of concern to her parents and which led her attending the nun-run Notre Dame Academy, a Catholic all-girls high school. With lessons in piano and singing since early, Katie soon found her bearings in the theatrical productions by the school and upon seeing her growth, teachers and later friends suggested her to enroll into Margaret O'Brien's Modeling School in Toledo. All this one was done in preparation of international Modeling and Talent Association's Hooray For Hollywood convention in New York City where she was asked to dance, sing and even recite a monologue from To Kill A Mockingbird.
But nothing exciting came her way in form of modeling and as luck would have it Katie landed a role in very her first movie The Ice Storm (1997), directed by Ang Lee. Then began, a series of auditioning for TV pilot shows that later turned into her bagging the famed "Dawson's Creek" (1998).
Career in Movies
While she was still associated with "Dawson's Creek", she got the chance to work in three movies, Disturbing Behavior (1998), Go (1999) and Wonder Boys (2000) . But her starring moment came when she got her first role as the leading lady in Abandon (2002) where she essayed the role of a college student, who is haunted by her boyfriend disappeared many years ago.
After six successful years of playing Joey Potter when the show finally came to end, Katie found herself with more time at hand to handle her movie career. She proved her mettle with diversified performances in Pieces of April (2003) and The Singing Detective (2003) and First Daughter (2004). Her major breakthrough came in the form when se was selected to play the childhood love interest of batman in Batman Begins (2005) opposite Christian Bale.
This was also the year that she got engaged to Tom Cruise, who is 16 years senior to her. The couple later tied the knot and has a girl child, Suri, a name born out from their firm belief in scientology.
The lady who likes to run for miles a couple of times in a week to find her sanity has been ranked 35 in Stuff magazine's "102 Sexiest Women in the World" (2002). Katie has proved that if played your cards well, nothing can stop you from winning that ultimate goal.
